GOT A FEW HOURS?

Fishing and wildlife observation are the park's traditional activities. The park is divided by the City of Houston aqueduct. The western portion is comprised of Sheldon Lake and Carpenter's Bayou. The eastern portion is Environmental Learning Center (ELC) and prairie.

  •  Birding is possible in all of the park's habitats including the lake marsh via the Yellow-rump trail, restored prairie, ELC and the open waters of the lake.
  • NO EXCUSE MOM & DAD! Fishing is free on the park! Fish at the ponds of the ELC or from the levee or boat on Sheldon Lake. Either way, no licenses are required while fishing on SLSP.

  • Environmental Learning Center (ELC) is open Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 8 a.m. - 7 p.m.
    • There are picnic tables here under shady sycamore trees.
    • ELC activities include group programming & activities. If you got a group looking for a weekend activity or a project call the park office at 281 456-2800.
    • FREE Family Fishing is available in Ponds 1S & 2S. Bring you own tackle. Some can poles are provided on a first-come-first-serve basis. BRING BAIT! "Family Fishing" is permitted Saturdays and Sundays only, for children accompanied by adults, in the two fishing ponds.
    • A Self-guided nature trail (an easy 1/2 mile loop) wends around 28 naturalized fishery ponds. Look for alligators, ducks, frogs, warblers and wildflowers. The area is a good example of bottomland habitat. Binoculars are useful.
    • Family learning too:
      • Alternative energy technologies and green building techniques. There are touch and see displays of photovoltaic, solar hot water, wind turbine & ground coupled geothermal demonstrated throughout ELC.
      • Wildscape demonstration garden shows techniques to use native plants and wildflowers that attract birds, butterflies and other wildlife to your backyard.
      • Compost demonstration area shows easy means of "recycling" household leaves and grass.
