"The most interesting thing about Sheldon Lake State Park's past is its future."

- Rob Comstock, SLSP Superintendent

Environmental learning at SLSP began when Park Superintendent Rob Comstock dug two small ponds, stocked them and bought fishing poles. Next he called some local schools and invited them to bring their school kids down to learn some fishing then wander about the park.

As Texas's populations becomes more urban, Rob recognized the challenge we must accept: help Houston's urban and suburban kids, the future stewards of Texas' nature resources, learn about their natural heritage from nature.

TPWD's commissioners recognized this too. They set in motion the plans that made Sheldon Lake SP an urban Environmental Learning model for Texas.

Environmental learning is a participation sport that involves children, teachers, parents and YOU!

Help the staff meet the missions of the park:

  • Inform the future stewards of Texas's natural beauty by helping them learn, smell, touch and explore native habitat.

  • Make the park a destination where families can visit native habitat, fish in a pond, see an Osprey eat a fish, watch an alligator or Gulf fritillary. Just share the wonder of nature.
